Alchemy Nights @ Looking Glass Cocktail Club on Hackney Road
Alchemy Nights are a collective of singers and spoken word/poetry performers selected to perform by the founders, DemiMa and JJ Soulx. Their residency at the Cocktail Club brings with it an aura of soul, with mood lighting and a live band to accompany the artists, and their jazzy, soft MCing really makes the audience feel at home. The lineup included Jazzy Aliyaah, with poetry rooted in her cultural heritage, the intricacies of family life and love for those close to her-her mother and grandmother, for example-and Matt Carver, characterized by personally-charged poetry tackling loneliness and heartbreak. The presence of strong and talented female poets made for a shed-load of wisdom on relationships (“Ladies if you love a man..”), but this was outshone by their brilliance, intelligence and supreme command of not only their bodies but the audience as well. These are the kings and queens of the spoken word/poetry scene, and I will certainly be coming back for more.
