2024 was the year unforgettable. From Dubai chocolate to Brat summer, I think we can all agree that it was epic. As we step into 2025, let us carry the same energy of passion and bold storytelling forward. The films of tomorrow will continue to push boundaries, spark new ideas and remind all of us about the power of cinema, shaping our world. But first, let's have a moment of reflection to remind ourselves of some of the most influential films of 2024.
1.
We begin with one of the longest running Broadway shows in history, surpassing The Lion King in 2019 to become the highest grossing Broadway musical of all time: Wicked. The phenomenal movie has grossed over $650 million so far. Its marketing strategy has been effective enough that I can guarantee you have heard of it. This movie is a perfect weekend watch at the cinema with your friends or at home where you can sing along with the actors. Walking down the school corridor I recently encountered a group of Year 13 girls singing ‘Defying Gravity’. If that does not sum up the power of this movie, I am not sure what will.
2.
Moving on, the next movie to be a Netflix hit, starring Sofia Carson is...Carry-On. Pack your suitcase, get comfy and fly away on a journey of thriller and action. This movie is a long run of 2 hours so be patient and watch the trailer before you let the red ribbon fly away. Here's the plot in one sentence: a young airline security guard is blackmailed by a mysterious passenger who threatens to smuggle a dangerous package onto a plane on Christmas Eve. The rest you'll have to see for yourself...
3.
Now we need to remember to keep the balance, therefore I present to you The Substance. When a fading celebrity gets fired by her director due to her age, she purchases a black-market drug to make herself younger, causing unexpected side effects. While the film is intriguing and thought-provoking, be prepared for its unconventional style and body horror moments that can be rather hard to watch. If you’re a fan of quirky, experimental storytelling, this film is worth your time, but if you’re looking for something more traditional, it might take you by surprise.
4.
Trigger warning: this movie is action-packed and filled with some epic fight scenes. The movie Trigger Warning, starring Jessica Alba in the lead role where she showcases her amazing self-defence moves. The plot follows a special forces commando who returns to her hometown after her father's sudden death, only to run afoul of a violent gang when she starts asking questions. This is a movie to add to your must watch on Netflix.
5.
Finally, we have How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (Lahn Mah in Thaï). A man quits work to care for his dying grandmother, motivated by her fortune and scheming to win her favour before she passes. When this comes to light, we see that everyone wants a cut of the cake. This comedy drama can be very amusing at times and could be good for a family movie night.
Hopefully at least one of these movies has caught your attention. A well-written movie is the perfect way to relax on weekends and keeping up with new releases also provides you with great conversation starters. These five movies are just the tip of the iceberg of 2024 cinema news.
Moving on to 2025, we must reflect on the old and look forward to the new but for now, enjoy your week and plan which of these movies you're going to watch in your free time!
